Liberals have spent the past few weeks trying to take President Donald Trump down by claiming that he is “mentally unstable” and that he may be suffering from dementia. Now, however, this has come back to bite them in a big way.
Real Clear Politics reported that constitutional law professor Alan Dershowitz went on “Hannity” on Monday night to say that now that the left “couldn’t criminalize political differences” in regard to President Trump, “they’re trying to pathologize, to psychiatrize political differences.” Dershowitz pointed out that it’s tyrannical governments that use the power of psychiatry and not the merits to debate their political opponents.
“They’re trying to say, ‘Oh maybe we can’t get him on crime but we’re going to show that he has mental problems, that he’s disturbed.’ The guy on CNN today was talking about he has Alzheimer’s and he should be subjected to a neurological exam,” Dershowitz said. “That is so dangerous.”
“That is what they did in the former Soviet Union,” Dershowitz continued. “I represented some dissidents in the Soviet Union who were sent to mental hospitals. They did it in China. They did that in apartheid South Africa. Look, I taught law and psychiatry for 25 years at Harvard. I co-edited the textbook on law and psychiatry. And the first rule of psychiatry is you do not diagnose based on political grounds.”
Dershowitz admitted that he didn’t even vote for Trump, yet he feels that the left’s latest strategy against the president is very wrong.
The Washington Post reported that one source close to Trump said the president resents talk about his mental state and that he views the issue as “an invented fact” and “a joke,” much like the Russia probe. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke out on Monday to slam what she called “ridiculous reports from detractors” and described an “outpouring of support from a totally indignant staff.”
“The White House perspective is outrage and disgust that people who do not know this President or understand the true depth of his intellectual capabilities would be so filled with hate they would resort to something so far outside the realm of reality or decency,” she said.
Former Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller explained the real reason the left has resorted to this.
“The political left wants this to become a debate about made-up attacks against the president rather than the president’s successes and the success of the country,” he said. “This is a pretty pathetic move.”
