Grandmother Dorothy Dow, 83, recently spent the night quietly tidying up her home in Meriwether County, Georgia before climbing into bed to go to sleep. Hours later, however, she was awakened by a thug brutally beating her with a gun, breaking bones in her hand and arm as she desperately tried to block the violent attack. Two other men and a woman soon joined in and attacked Dow as well.
“These suspects began to demand money from Miss Dow. She pleaded with them that she didn’t have any money. They began to brutally beat her,” Sheriff Chuck Smith said, according to WSBTV.
Eventually, another man entered the room and set Dow on fire before both attackers fled. Dow managed to roll out of bed as she frantically looked for a gallon of water that she kept next to her breathing machine. When she found it, she was able to pour it on herself to put the fire out even though she had broken bones in her hands.
“She said ‘I thought they were going to kill me’. They told her that she was never going to see her sons again,” said Dow’s daughter-in-law, Beth Dow. “She remembered she had a gallon of water she filled her breathing machine with. With those broken hands, she took that top off the gallon of water and poured it on her head to put out the flames.”
Dow spent weeks in the hospital after the attack fighting for her life, but sadly, she ended up succumbing to her injuries.
Police have arrested Justin Pierce Grady, 38, Cortavious Deshun Heard, 18, Shanquavious Keontrell Cameron, 17, Mina Christine Ellery, 17, and Angel Latrice Harmon, 17, in connection to this case and they are now facing charges related to the robbery and murder of Dow.
