Michelle Obama is such an egomaniac that she prides herself on being one of the most popular First Ladies of all time. That’s why it came as bad news to her this week when a series of attacks on her resurfaced, and they show that she was anything but beloved.
The Cut reported that Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who was the director of the West Virginia non-profit the Clay County Development Corporation, took to Facebook after Donald Trump won the election to say that she was looking forward to having Melania Trump as First Lady.
“It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House,” she wrote. “I’m tired of seeing a [sic] Ape in heels.”
“Just made my day Pam,” Beverly Whaling, the local mayor, said in response.
Taylor was fired and Whaling was forced to resign over the backlash, but the incident shows what little regard many Americans had for Michelle.
“My comment was not intended to be racist at all,” Whaling wrote afterwards. “I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feeling this may have caused! Those who know me know that I’m not in any way racist! Again, I would like to apologize for this getting out of hand!”
Patrick Rushing, mayor of Airway Heights in Washington state, also came under fire for calling Michelle a “gorilla face” on Facebook.
“Gorilla face Michelle, can’t disagree with that,” Rushing wrote. “The woman is not attractive except to monkey man Barack. Check out them ears. LOL.”
The local city council called for Rushing to resign over the comment, but he refused to comply.
“I made a mistake. I owned up to my mistake,” Rushing told the Spokesman-Review. “If I do resign that’s admitting I’m a racist and I’m not.”
He went on to say that the comments were just “playful back and forth banter that my friends and I do.”
Georgia school teacher Jane Wood Allen also got herself in trouble for calling Michelle a “gorilla.”
“First lady Michelle Obama continues to top lists of most admired women in the world,” Allen wrote in a Facebook post. “Do you admire her? I admire a gorilla more than I admire her. (Wait I forgot, she is a gorilla)! … She is the worst example of a first lady ever! (Oh sorry, I meant gorilla not first lady)!”
“This poor Gorilla,” she later added. “How is she going to function in the real world, by not having her luxurious vacations paid for anymore? She needs to focus on getting a total makeover (especially the hair), instead of planning vacations!”
